Hi everyone,

Here is the news you’ve all been waiting for:

The play-off tournament this Saturday, August 28 at the Holly Community Centre (HCC)/ Holly Meadows Elementary School (HMES) will include 8 teams (2 couldn’t field a full team).

There will be two pools of 4 teams, each team will play the other 3 in their pool once. Then the top team from each pool will play each other for the championship, and the second teams will play for 3rd, etc. Games will be 40 minutes each, with set start times and hard cap times. If one team reaches 15 points before the 40 minutes is up (which I don’t think has happened yet), the game ends then. Your captains have the details for the start/end of games, and captains of all teams playing are to attend a meeting prior to the start of the tournament. Please make sure you bring your flags if you got them from me.

POOL A: H, J, F, E (@HCC)             POOL B: I, A, (B&C), D  (@HMES)

GAMES:

9:00 – 9:40 am          H vs J          I vs A

F vs E          (B&C) vs D

9:55 – 10: 35 am       H vs F           I vs (B&C)

J vs E             A vs D

10:50 – 11:30 am    H vs E            I vs D

J vs F             A vs (B&C)

FINALS: 11:45 am Fields TBD

PLEASE NOTE that there are penalties for teams not able to start at 9:00 am so make sure you are on time.

The address is 151 Mapleton Ave, it’s just west of Essa Rd on Mapleton. There are several linked parking lots, you have to go to the back to see the two fields. The fields are separated by a line of trees, and the “league tent” with bagels and fruit will be between the two fields. Water jugs will be supplied to each field. You are responsible for your own electrolytes, sunscreen,

Captains are to meet the convenor at 8:30 am to go over rules and subs, and subs are to show up at 8:40 so all the captains can see who’s who. Anyone from a Monday team not already subbing on a team, please come at 8:40 and we will see if we can find a spot for you.

See you all on Saturday!

I have updated the Monday night schedule after the cancellations on the 9th; please check to make sure you go to the right fields.

CAPTAINS: I have updated the scores that I have, and I have made all the games for which I have no scores into 0-0 TIES. I need the right scores so the standings are accurate. TUESDAYS this applies especially to you as your play-offs start next week and I need to make sure the standings are right. If I don’t get scores, I will place the team with the most “unsubmitted games” in last place and work up from there.

PLAY-OFFS: Tuesday nights are at Eastview at your regular game time, starting next week (August 17) with 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4, the on August 24, the two winners play for the championship and the other two play for 3rd. Monday nights your play-offs are a tournament on the DAY of August 28th, at the Holly Community Centre and adjacent field. We will have food and drinks, but no bbq this year as we’re not allowed to at that location. If you know of a near-by place we’d be permitted to have a bbq, let me know. We will most likely have pizza if we can’t find a place for the bbq.

So once again, all the city fields are closed due to the rain yesterday and today, and unfortunately that means our games tonight are cancelled. As per last time, the games will be shifted forward and I’ll do that on the schedule later this week. The first two games of the season were exhibition, so even with the two nights’ cancellations, each team plays the others once “for real”.

This does mean you won’t be seeing your team and captain tonight, so please let them know if you can or can’t make it to the tournament on the 28th.

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder, the play-off tournament for the Monday night Rec league is on Saturday, August 28 and will run from approximately 8 am – 2 pm. I will post more info as it gets closer, but for now please mark your calendars and let your captains know if you can make it. It’s a great day of ultimate and a nice way to see a bit of what a tournament is like.

The schedule for Monday nights has been updated.

Hi everyone,

There was a minor mix-up about the field at the soccer complex (BSC#3) – we DO NOT have that field until June. This means that all games scheduled there for May have been moved. I apologize for the error.

BSC#3-1 games will go at Codrington (the school field) and BSC#3-2 games will go at Allandale Heights (also school field). Please note this in your calendars!

Monday nights are full, absolutely and completely. If you really want to play Mondays, email me (Talena) and I will put you on a waiting list. If there are enough people to make two teams (so even numbers) I will do so. At present this looks highly unlikely. Tuesdays have room for 4 males and that is all – again, email me first, please. Thursdays (Competitive) are definitely taking players, so contact Jim or Tyler. The Juniors need coaches so if you’d like some extra field time, contact Julianna or Diana. (all addresses are “name@barrieultimate.com”).

OK, here they are. If you are not on the lists, it is because you need to do one of three things: pay, register & pay (late fee) or register as an ODSA member (paid at Pub Night but not yet registered). Registration has been re-opened on the ODSA website.

Teams are here - 2010_Rec_Teams

Schedules are here – Monday  2010_Mon_Rec & Tuesday 2010_Tues_Rec.

IF you are down as a (cpt) it means I’ve emailed to ask if you can at least come to the Captains’ meeting and haven’t heard back. If you are listed as a Captain but have not heard from me, I haven’t dug out your email address yet regarding the captains’ meeting, but will do so tomorrow. THANK YOU to all my volunteers!

Hi everyone,

The snow is gone, the grass is growing, and it’s time to get ready for summer ultimate! We have a great season planned for you so get your cleats out and read on for this season’s info. New stuff for each league is first, then the summary of the things that we usually do just as a reminder.

REC PLAY-OFFS

The schedule for the day is here. The standings for the 10 teams playing are:

1st-I     2nd-K    3rd-B    4th-L    5th-M    6th-N   7th-F    8th-A   9th-C/D  10th-J

The first games are at 8:30 am, last round-robin games are at 12:30 pm, and the Championship is at 1:30 pm.

Each team has one bye so if you like sleeping in, check to see when yours is just in case!

There will be water and snacks, and a lunch BBQ will be provided. Spectators are welcome so bring them out. Canine spectators must be on leashes and cannot be used as subs.

Teams A, B, M and N, your games are on field 6, not field 3. Fields all have numbers on little signs near them so it should be easy to find!

REC PLAY-OFFS

The Rec play-offs will be a tournament on Saturday, August 29 at the Tree Nursery in Midhurst. Games will start in the morning and finish by early afternoon. Games will be time-capped and shorter than the Monday night ones!

This will be updated with more information as the date approaches, so for now ask your captains if you have any questions.

GAMES FOR MONDAY, JULY 27 ARE CANCELLED.

The schedule will be shifted forward one week to make up for this, so next week you will play at the field and against the team that you would have played tonight. The following week (Aug. 10) play the original Aug. 3 schedule. I will update the schedule later this week and post when it has been done.

If your game was at the Barrie Sports Complex last week and was cancelled, we are working on rescheduling, but I need to know if enough players for each team can make a Wednesday night game. Please let your captains know before this Friday (July 10) so that we can work out either rescheduled dates or another alternative.

For future reference, if you do not hear from anyone about a cancellation but think it’s a possibility, the BSC info line for inclement weather is (705) 739-4215.

As of June 1, Central is closed for maintenance. All Rec games that were scheduled for Central are at INNISDALE. The updated schedule is here: 09_rec_schedule.

UPDATE:  The website schedule is now updated, and Innisdale is on the map page.
—Ian.

Here is the new list of teams: 09_rec_teams_final

Changes were as minimal as I could make them while trying to accommodate requests and skill and gender balancing.

Please make sure you read over the new team lists to make sure you know which team you are on.

Please also note that as of June 1, all games listed as being at Central will be at Innisdale due to field maintenance scheduling. A new schedule with that change will be posted by June 1.

There have been a number of requests for Rec, either to add someone (usually a friend) or to switch to a different team, so please take note:

I will NOT be making ANY changes until after the games on Monday, May 18. This is to give the captains a chance to evaluate the teams as they are and to let me know if there are any serious discrepancies. After I hear from all captains after the next game, I will look into the changes and additions I have been asked about. I will then make any/all changes at the same time, and inform everyone that is affected by them. If anyone wishes to play, or has a friend that is thinking about it, please email me (talena@barrieultimate.com) and ask me to put you on my waiting list. Girls especially, as we need more females for most teams.

Please also note that the fee for Rec is $95 as there is a late fee.

Hi everyone,

You should have received an email through the ODSA website with this attached, please let me know if you didn’t.

Here are the teams for this season!

summer 2009 rec teams

Are Monday May 11 (this coming Monday) at 6:30 pm at these fields: North, Central, Allandale. I have tentative teams and schedule done, but am waiting to finalize them until tonight because of some late registrations. Don’t worry, you will know which team you’re on and which field to go to before Monday.

Hi everyone,

If you still haven’t registered, you can do so until 5 pm on Wednesday, May 6; but there’s a late fee of $15. This means that Rec teams and schedule will not be posted until Thursday evening. Games still start on May 11 for Rec and May 14 for Competitive. There will be an email with Rec teams and schedules that night as well as the posting, and I will then send some other things you need to know. So please READ THAT EMAIL in full.
Competitive teams, you still have some time to pay your first $100 and sign up, so even if you’ve told someone you have a team, please PAY, officially tell Jim, and make sure all your players register as ODSA members.

Talena

When registering for summer rec league, you have a number of options, now including the credit card payment we thought was set up initially. So if you haven’t registered yet, when you do so you can pay in one of the following ways:

  • Credit card online
  • Bring a cheque or cash to the Lockerroom on Thursday, April 30, between 7:00 and 8:30.
  • Send an Interac money transfer to Becki at treasurer@barrieultimate.com.
  • Use PayPal (lets you pay online without revealing your credit card info, once you have a PayPal account).
  • Contact Becki at treasurer@barrieultimate.com to arrange mailing her a cheque.

If you have already registered, you may cancel your registration and then re-register and pay online with a credit card. If you want to do this, please email me at talena@barrieultimate.com.

You won’t be able to play until you’ve paid in full.

Once I have all the registrations in and teams/schedule made up, I will email everyone with those and a few of our policies that you need to know about. They will be posted too, and your captains will have your info so they can also let you know. That should take 4-5 days.

Hi everyone!
Welcome to a new summer season. There are some changes this year to registration, mainly that it is through the provincial ultimate organization (Ontario Disc Sports Organization), so there will be no more paper waivers to sign. Also, the fee is lower for Rec as jerseys are not included. Everyone that played Rec last year got a red away jersey, so this year if you’re new, there’s the option for you to get one when you register – highly recommended so that you aren’t trying to find a shirt every week. Plus, they look good and they’re great to play in.
PLEASE NOTE THAT REGISTRATION FOR BOTH LEAGUES CLOSES ON FRIDAY, MAY 1.

REC:
It’s a two-step process on the ODSA website (www.ondisc.org). First, you register as a member of ODSA, which includes your waiver and insurance (click “Register” on the left-hand side). Second, you sign in as a member and click on our registration (Barrie Summer Rec league 2009; it’s listed under Calendar & Events) to fill out the info we need for our league and to pay for registration.
Everyone MUST register online. For those of you that want to pay in person and/or pick up a jersey, there will once again be a pub night – Thursday, April 30 at the Lockerroom on Cundles.
You register as an individual, but groups of up to six can be requested.
I still need some more captains (thanks very much to those of you that have volunteered!), and there will be another email after registration closes with further information about games and the league.
As usual, Rec games are Monday nights. First game will be Monday, May 11.
____________________________________________________________________
COMPETITIVE:
Jim Millington is the convenor for Comp. If you are playing Competitive but not Rec, you still have to register as a member of ODSA so you have the waiver and insurance taken care of. It is then a team fee for Comp ($500 just like last year), so either get a team together then let Jim know, or let him know you want to play but don’t have a team. As per last year, please also use the FORUM to let people know you’re putting a team together or want to play on one. Try the forum first so Jim isn’t bombarded by masses of mail.
On or before May 1, $100 is due per team. The other $400 is due before the first game of the season, or that game is forfeited – again, just like last year.
As usual, Competitive games are on Thursdays. First games will be Thursday, May 14.

Have fun and see you on the field!
Talena

I know you’re all antsy to get registered for your summer season, so to ease the suspense:

Registration should be up and running by Monday. You will be able to order a shirt if you want one – highly recommended that new players order a red “away” shirt – and can pay online. Registration will close on May 1, and the first games will be the week of May 11.

If you want to see us and give us money in person (I always like having lots of cash!), a few of us exec will be at the Lockerroom on Cundles on May 1.

We still need more CAPTAINS. If you don’t volunteer, I may just pick you anyway…

As always, if you have questions about summer rec, email me at talena@barrieultimate.com.

It’s that time of year again – the snow is just a temporary glitch – so get your cleats and summer wear ready! We are expecting at least 12 Rec teams again this year, and we need CAPTAINS. As we had last year, there will be fully loaded Captain’s Packages and meetings to help you on your way. I’d also like to remind those of you wanting to play Competitive that it is team registration, so if you want to play, start looking for teammates. We will need captains for this league too, so please identify yourself on the forum if you want to captain a Comp team.

Email Talena (Summer Rec Convenor) at talena@barrieultimate.com to let me know you’d like to be a captain for Rec. Thanks to all of you that do!

Hi everyone,

The Rec season finals will be a playoff tournament on Saturday, August 23 at the Tree Nursery (this should not be a surprise to anyone). Games will start (as in line up and pull) at 9 a.m. Your captains will be getting details on Wed., Aug. 13 about format etc.

There will be a BBQ lunch provided after the games, and there will be cups games available, a skills competition, AND a bouncy castle for the kids (or very light adults). Please bring your kids! Fans are welcome, as always.

This is a very large topic, so we’ll start with what a foul is, what a violation is, and the “call / contest” stuff.

Basically, a foul and a violation are both ways that the rules of the game are broken. A foul is defined as “non-incidental contact between opposing players… in general the player initiating the contact has committed the foul.” A violation is “any infraction of the rules other than a foul.” So basically, if you hit someone on the other team and it affects the play (e.g. marker hits thrower’s arm and throw is affected), it’s a foul, if you break a rule but don’t touch them, it’s a violation (e.g. double team or fast count). The person that is fouled calls the foul / violation, usually, though in the Spirit of the Game with new people involved sometimes the person committing the foul/violation will call it on themselves. After it’s called, the person that broke the rules can either agree or contest (disagree), in the case of a foul; or in the case of a violation, “fix” whatever the violation was (e.g. move farther away, slow the stall count). There are specific responses to calls, contests, etc., based on the foul/violation, which are detailed in the rules. Next week we’ll look at the continuation rule, and then we’ll start in on the fouls, violations and appropriate “following actions”.

Zone is a type of defense in which you are responsible for covering an area rather than a person. The intent is basically to close off the throwing lanes on the field so that your opponents can’t throw upfield, and to force a turnover when they try it. The type of zone will depend on your team and probably your captain’s preferences, but generally there are three parts to a zone: front, mid, and deep. The people in the front are the ones on the disc, one marking the thrower and counting, and the other(s) just over 3 metres / 10 feet away from the thrower, blocking a portion of the field. The mids are (hmm) the middle of the zone, and it’s their job to cover runners in that area and / or knock down the mid-length throws. The deeps are the ones nearest the end zone your team is ‘protecting’ and they are the ones that stop the long throws – usually they are fast and tall or can jump well. They are also ideally going to call guidance to the mids when there are runners coming into their area. For more specifics, your captains will set you up!

The boundary lines are marked by cones, and in some cases there will be a painted line on the field for one or more of the boundary lines. Inside the line is IN, on and outside the line are OUT.

Whether you are in or out depends only on the first point of contact.

If you catch the disc in the air, it’s your first foot touching the ground that counts—if that foot is in-bounds, you’re in-bounds, even if you then keep running out (just back up to where you first touched down and keep playing).

If that foot is on the line or out, you’re out—the other team gets the disc.

If you’re standing still and straddling the line, you’re out.

If you can keep a body part in and on the ground and catch the disc before touching the ground with a body part on or over the line, you’re in.

If you can jump from IN bounds, catch the disc out of bounds and throw it back in before you land (if you’re going to be landing out), the disc is still good. And, you’re awesome!

When checking to see if you are in (either in bounds or in the end zone for a point), use the two closest pylons. Whether you’re in or out is up to the person with the best perspective.

If you were reading the disc overhead as you caught it, you probably didn’t have the best perspective. But, then again, neither did the guy at the other end of the field shouting “Check feet! You’re out!”. This is where Spirit of the Game comes in—if you’re out, say so. If you’re in (and think you had the best perspective), you can call back some polite version of “nope, I’m in, play on”.

As noted in last week’s tip, a time cap is a way to determine when the game ends and who wins it. As you’ve probably seen by now, it can take more time than we have good light to play to 17 points. There are two kinds of time caps, soft caps and hard caps. A soft cap is partially reliant on score – if a certain score has been reached by the soft time cap, the game ends and the team with the most points wins. Generally the soft cap is the end of the game if one team is up by two or more points at the predetermined cap time (e.g. 8:30 p.m.). A hard cap is a predetermined time when the game is over, regardless of score. In our Rec league, ties are allowed. For both soft and hard time caps, captains decide on them before the game, and the current point being played is finished if the time cap is reached during a point (so if it’s 8:30 p.m. but you’re still playing a point, you go until someone scores it).

Games can end in two ways, either by points or a time cap. We’ll go over points this week, and time caps will be next week’s tip. Games are “to 17, win by 2″. This means that the first team to get 17 points wins, as long as the other team has 15 points or less – hence “win by 2″. If the score is 16-16 and one team scores to make it 17-16, at least one more point must be played so that the score is 18-16. If the games goes from 17-16 to 17-17, at least two more points must be played so that one team wins 19-17. (and so on until one team has at least 17 points, AND 2 points more than the other team).

… the teams are finalized as of 11:30 a.m. today and registration will no longer be available. Anyone seeing this after that time, if you are desperate to play the men’s and women’s touring teams practice at Central on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., and there may still be room on a competitive team on Thursday nights (see prior post by Andy Beecroft).

Teams and schedule will be posted by Wednesday, May 7.
