One significant change to take note of is that the Board decided to change for the format for the Comp League next summer (Thursday nights). A draft type system similar to indoor will be put in place, where you can submit a partial team and then it is up to the convener to balance them. Also, on-line registration will now offered. It is our hope that this system will make it easier for everyone to register for the league who wants to play, while also making the teams more competitive.

Thanks everyone for another great season. We had an awesome end of season tournament on August 27th for our intermediate league where players endured the heat and relentless sun on some really nice Innisfil fields. A special thanks for Scott MacDonald & Aarron Kucherawy for putting together a fun day for us. The big winners of the day were, of course, Team F-bomb who beat out Team I in the finals.

Also this was Talena’s last summer as outdoor convenor. Talena is stepping down this year and Sarah and Chris Bolton will be filling the really big shoes of this position. Thank you Talena for everything you’ve done for the league over the past couple of years, you’ve done a great job and you will be missed.

Recreational League

We had a consistent turn out for our Tuesday night league. What started off as a six week program continued on right through to the end of the summer. Thank you Andrew Clark for all the time you volunteered this summer to help groom our new recruits.

Competitive League

Thursday night had a really fun season this year and we saw lots of new faces and just a lot of great ultimate. Congratulations to Team Alpha who walks away Thursday night Champions! More sad news, Jim Millington will also be stepping down as Comp League Convenor. Thanks Jim for keeping things fun on Thursday. The snow is gone, the grass is growing, and it’s time to get ready for summer ultimate! We have a great season planned for you so get your cleats out and read on for this season’s info. New stuff for each league is first, then the summary of the things that we usually do just as a reminder.

RECREATIONAL LEAGUE: Tuesday nights (May 10th – Mid August)

Welcome to new Ultimate players or those looking to get back into it and improve your skills. If you are excited about trying a new sport, learning more about Ultimate and increasing your level of activity in a fun and supportive team setting, then this league is for you. And, all league members will receive their own Disc as part of their registration!

Every week you will be given valuable instruction on the basic skills of ultimate as well as the tactical approach to the game. During the second half of the evening, players will be split into teams to practice their skills in a pick-up Ultimate game. Later on in the season, ability-matched teams will be selected to compete in a fun round-robin style league until the end of August. All participants will have the opportunity to participate in the end of season tournament.

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE: Monday Nights

Due to the growth in both size and skill of the league overall, we are changing Monday nights to “Intermediate”. That means it’s for people with at least some ultimate knowledge, skills and experience who like to play at a level essentially between beginner and truly competitive. The same Monday night format and registration etc. will all apply:

Fees: $80

Registration will run until April 30, and there will be a Pub Night Monday, May 2 (7-9 pm) for those of you that need to pay cash. You must register online even if you pay cash. You must have paid to be put on the list for team-making; if you have not paid by the time registration closes (i.e., online by midnight April 30, or registered online by then and paid cash between 7-9 pm at Pub Night) there are no guarantees that you will be put on a team later.
You can register as an individual and groups of up to 6 may ask to play together as long as all of you ask to play with each other (so A asks to play with B, C and D, B asks to play with A, C and D, etc.). Teams are made by the convenor and will be made with balance as the first priority – it is highly likely, but not guaranteed, that groups will be kept together. Players self-rank when registering; PLEASE read the ranking descriptions as it makes the league much more fun when the ranks are accurate and teams can be put together well.

Season: will start the week of May 9 and run until the week of August 22. Play-offs will be a tournament on Saturday, August 27.

Games start at 6:30 pm and will end at 8:30 pm. In the past, games have not started on time and there have been issues with hard caps when it is light really late. Therefore, all games will start and end at the designated times.

I need captains, so if you want to volunteer contact the Intermediate convenor at (talena@barrieultimate.com); packages will be given out again with all the info you need so if you’re new to it, you will have everything you need.
Like previous years the first two games of the season will be no zone and will be considered exhibition. This allows the teams some time to get to know each other and it also allows the captains to check the balance of their teams.

We play on ALL Mondays, including those that fall on a long weekend.

There will be an end-of-season (food, hopefully bbq) at the tournament.

Please also note that this will be the last year that Talena will run the Monday night league, so we will need a volunteer to take over. If you volunteer early, it will be easier to do it next year… so let Talena know if you’re interested (talena@barrieultimate.com).

COMPETITIVE LEAGUE

When: Thursday nights at 6:30 starting on May 12th.
Where: TBD
Cost: $500/team
Who can play: Anyone who is athletic, competitive, and knows how to play. Competitive is not just for the superstars who have been playing for years. It’s for anyone who truly wants to elevate their game to the next level. We would like to grow the Competitive League, so send me an email if you want more information.
How is it different than the Intermediate League: Captains sign up their teams. They can get whoever they like on their team. So it’s a great opportunity to build a strong team or a team of people who you love to play with.
Lots of different ways to sign up:
1) Find a captain of an existing team and ask if you can join. Ask around on Monday if you are playing indoor.

To register, go to www.ondisc.org and either sign in or register. There is a list on the right-hand side (Calendar & Events) which will have “Barrie Ultimate League Registration” in it; click on that and off you go! Please note that all players of the summer league, regardless of which division they play in, must be a registered ODSA member who has signed the online waiver to play. Like last year, online payment is preferred but for those who wish to pay cash can attend our pub night.

Pub Night will be at the Monday May 2nd at the Lockerroom. Pub Night will be the pre-season “meet and greet” for the league, so even if you are not registering or paying that night, come out to meet your league. Also, we are very excited to be returning to the Lockerroom this summer for our post-game get-togethers.

Your 2010 Executive

In the meantime, for those that love disc sports as much as we love disc sports, the executive wants to get your thoughts regarding the building of a disc golf course in Barrie. We’ve been contacted by a soon to be organization called the Barrie Disc Golf Club. They are currently in the process of petitioning the City for the development of a local course. This is a huge opportunity for disc sports in Barrie! As such, we will be circulating a petition regarding this issue to our members as a show of our support for this endeavor. Hopefully, we can get work it in with our registration information, so keep your eyes open for it.
